WHAT TO EXPECT IN BUENOS AIRES

ARGENTINA Temperatures range from the mid 20's to over 100 degrees with high humidity and lots of rain. Flooding is quite common and dirt roads can become quite muddy. Missionaries will do lots of walking and bus riding (usually standing room only). Buses are a good place to make contacts. The Argentines are warm, friendly, fun-loving people with strong extended families. They enjoy good food, conversation, and above all soccer (futbol). Missionaries will be asked very soon upon arrival which team they are for. Especially volatile is the Boca vs. River rivalry. In a nutshell, learn about futbol. In many small towns, people still go to the butcher, the baker, and the grocer every day. Literacy rate is high. Argentines have been able to weather all sorts of political and economic turmoil without losing hope in the future. They have a great love for their country. Beef is the Argentine specialty; especially the charbroiled (asado) variety. Other foods to look forward to are empanada, noquis, dulce de leche, facturas and alfajor. You will also see a lot of spaghetti, bread loaves, pizza, soft drinks and good ice cream (helado). Foods not to look forward to are mondongo (cow stomach) and locro (a cow stomach and bean stew concoction). Most houses do not have central heating and you will probably never see carpet.
